Beyond Understandin’, a nonprofit organization began with the desire to find other parents in the community to build personal networks for son and I, and locate other parents who had similar concerns caring for a child with a disability. I discovered there were more families like me living the community than I realize, and like myself, many felt discouraged to leave home because of social and community issues. What began as a personal quest for self-needs, turned into an avocation to make a difference.
Although few resources exists, people with disabilities are not well represented in their community which can have an impact on a person’s health, according to a 2013 study conducted by the Center for Community Health Development. Current research and best practice suggest communities that adopt inclusive and accessible principles can increase its economic capacity, and influence individual health and well-being.
